Do you have a university-related conflict or concern?

The Office of Ombuds服务 is a confidential resource available to 马塞诸斯州大学波士顿 students, 教师, 和工作人员.

The Ombuds can help you think through complex issues 和 generate a range of options or approaches. You are in the driver’s seat—和 get to decide on any next steps. The Ombuds can provide practical assistance in a variety of ways—by serving as a sounding board, helping to clarify concerns, coaching for improved communication, 解释政策, 定位资源, making anonymous inquiries, facilitating conversations, 和更多的. 

The Ombuds doesn’t have institutional authority or participate in formal processes. Talking with the Ombuds does not put your concern “on the record” or place the university “on notice”—however we can help you explore different options for formally addressing or reporting your concern. 

In addition to working with individuals 和 groups the Ombuds serves the campus by supporting effective communication, ethical 和 fair practices, 公平与包容, 和 a culture of dignity 和 respect. Through our work we are able to surface 和 aggregate organizational issues 和 trends 和 bring those to the attention of campus leaders. 

By offering a confidential 和 非正式的 channel for addressing concerns, the Ombuds helps create a healthier work 和 learning environment 和 supports a more positive organizational culture.

玛莎帕特里克, 地中海, CO-OP® was appointed as the inaugural 大学监察员 和 Director of Ombuds服务 in June 2023. She provides confidential, 非正式的, 公正的, 和 independent assistance to students, 教师, 和工作人员. Martha has worked in public higher education for 25 years, previously at 马塞诸斯州大学的 Amherst 和 UConn. She has specialized training in mediation, 便利化, 和 conflict coaching 和 has earned CO-OP® certification through the International Ombuds Association.

Your Visit: What to Expect

摄入.  When you first meet with the Ombuds, we will conduct a brief intake. This gives us the information we need to follow up with you 和 statistical information we collect about our work. Any identifying information is treated as confidential. We’ll also review our st和ards of practice to be sure you underst和 how we operate 和 to answer any questions you may have.

谈话.  Next, you’ll have a chance to talk through the issue that brought you to the office. The Ombuds may ask clarifying questions, but mostly we will listen without judgment in order to underst和 your concern.

选项 & 训练.  The Ombuds will work with you to develop options to help you resolve your concern. We can clarify relevant university policies, procedures, 和 norms. We can identify available resources or explain the channels for making a formal complaint. We can serve as a conflict coach—helping you outline talking points, 起草一封电子邮件, or develop a plan of action. Sometimes we can help by making an anonymous inquiry, serving as an intermediary or 公正的 facilitator. You 和 the Ombuds will discuss 和 weigh your options so that you can determine how you want to proceed - 和 you will decide whether or when to take any next steps. 

非标识数据.  When your matter is concluded, the Ombuds will enter non-identifying data into the Ombuds database, delete identifying information, 和 shred any 非正式的 notes the Ombuds may have taken. 每年, Ombuds服务 aggregates the non-identifying information 和 issues an annual report summarizing the types of concerns brought to the office.

  • Take sides or decide who is right/wrong in a conflict or concern
  • Maintain or provide records that identify you
  • Participate in formal investigations or processes

  • Provide psychological counseling
  • Enforce, revise, or rescind existing policies, regulations, or laws
